biz.yahoo.com Company Press Release Network Solutions Agrees to Dept. of Commerce Testbed Extension All Five Testbed Registrars Have Complete Access HERNDON, Va.--(BUSINESS WIRE)--July 16,1999-- Network Solutions, Inc. (NASDAQ: NSOL - news) today announced it has agreed to the U.S. Department of Commerce's request for an extension of the Shared Registration System (SRS) testbed period through August 6, 1999. The three-week extension, expected to be the final extension, will provide for further operational testing by the five testbed registrars certified by Network Solutions to offer registration services in the .com, .net and .org top level domains. All the five testbed registrars have achieved SRS technical certification and have the capability to access NSI's registry for real time domain name registrations in .com, .net and .org. The five registrars were named on April 21, to be part of a testbed period from April 26 through June 26. The initial testbed period was extended from June 26 through July 16. ''We are pleased to have met all the requirements for the five testbed registrars to begin offering registrations,'' said David H. Holtzman, chief technology officer, Network Solutions. ''It is now in their hands to initiate their business systems for registration services.'' While Network Solutions is continuing to work with the initial testbed registrars, Network Solutions' business affairs office has already contacted the next eleven registrars to enable them to begin software development of the client end of the SRS interface. Each of the five testbed registrars has an assigned Network Solutions account representative backed by a technical team that provides around-the-clock access. Each new registrar is required to build its own registration system and is responsible for its own pricing, customer service, staffing, training, policy development, billing, backoffice support and legal liability for domain name registrations. This is an initial phase in the evolution of competition among registrars and all open Internet registries for registration services as envisioned in the June 1998 ''White Paper'' (Management of Internet Names and Addresses) issued by the U.S. Government. A registry who is with information about registrations by registrar is available at the nsiregistry.com Web site. About Network Solutions Founded in 1979, Network Solutions, Inc.
