Bell Atlantic's DSL Service Resuming After Fri Crash

NEW YORK -- Bell Atlantic Corp.'s (BEL) high-speed Internet access service failed intermittently for some East Coast customers Friday after the company performed a software upgrade, a company spokeswoman said.

The service outages affected less than 10% of subscribers to Bell Atlantic's digital subscriber line, or DSL, service, spokeswoman Joan Rasmussen said. The software upgrade occurred overnight and Bell Atlantic became aware of the outages around 7 a.m. EDT Friday.

"We have restored many of the customers and only have a few to go" as of around 4:45 p.m. EDT, Rasmussen said. The company does yet not know why the outages occurred.

Bell Atlantic's InfoSpeed DSL service was unveiled in October and introduced to Manhattan customers Thursday. Rasmussen said the outages did not affect Manhattan.

Bell Atlantic reported that it fixed Friday's problem with its DSL Internet access service by 4:15 p.m. The company also revised earlier estimates of how many customers were affected.

Less than 2% of DSL customers had the intermittent service that followed a software upgrade to the system, said spokeswoman Rasmussen. The customers came from all five locations where the Baby Bell offers the high-speed access: Washington, Pittsburgh, northern New Jersey, Boston and Philadelphia.

The software was installed Thursday night to add new features to the DSL service.
