A Digital Signal Processor (DSP) controls products like high-density hard-disk drives, desktop videoconferencing and audio/video compression by rapidly processing large amounts of digital information. This technology, when used in conjunction with
mixed-signal devices and embedded software, is referred to as a
DSP Solution, and it collects, processes, compresses, transmits
and displays the analog and digital data found in today's most
popular multimedia applications.

Digital Signal Processor, just as its name says, is a specialized processor that does digital signal processing. Digital signal processing is basically a set of mathematical algorithms that's used for communications, audio/video processing, and motor-control. These mathematical algorithms are special in that they heavily rely on multiplication and addition instructions. Digital signal processors typically are very efficient at doing these instructions. Probably the most common usage of a DSP is to do filtering. A low pass filter, as an example, cuts off high frequency components of a signal.
