The choice will be pushed to the customer at Best Buy and Circuit
City. The STB's will be required to be sold retail.
The STB makers will have several models. The cheaper ones will be
naked diskless. The high end will have disks. The Cable companies
will not distribute expensive STB's with disks if only to see them
not being used. Not to mention the support costs in repairing disk
drives. Best Buy will be happy to sell service contracts.

The VCR will not go away unless customers stop renting tapes.
Only VOD will offer that unless Blockbuster goes DVD.
DVD has come close but it looks like the VCR will continue to win
especially if customers continue to tape their soap opera and
sports events. Not to mention taping one show while they watch another. Tivio will stuggle to replace the VCR. Yea mobile laptop
users and yuppies who have everything will buy them. But my parents
who just figured out the VCR clock and Micro Wave will not.
