george:<apple vs dell> I am watching Pixar's new headquarters building being built, next to me in Emeryville. Although it is only a two story building, the framing is all in steel. And you can tell from the slopes/curves/builtin flashing that although it will have beautiful lines (which helps alot in the inner city), that it is also built to last. (So many times flashings around curves is an afterthought..) I go there and watch the mechanical systems going in now; there are more of the lastest materials and assembly techniques being used, than I have ever seen in commercial construction... What I am saying, is Steve seems to have made a very LONG range plan with Pixar, and I'm surprised to hear he would have let go of his attention to detail with Apple in the classroom...
''''' I find hearing about Steve fascinating...talk about a flexible mind...but it is also a story of flare versus steadfastness. If Pixar serves that side of his brain, how good is he at building a management team at Apple now? And is he even more motivated now, because he has had very major setbacks...
''''' Does Mickey need more of a setback, to manage wall street better?...Will Dell shareholders ever recover, if different dell leaders could have imparted more of an internut valuation to dell by now? Could Mickey have come in as a stranger and been as creative as Lou with IBM? Could Mickey have managed wall street for IBM anyway near the way Lou's team has and will continue to?
''''' On the other hand, Mickey seems more like a mix of Gates and Grove--- his vision is that implementation is the need of the time---not creativity necessarily...
