The book didn't make me think either; more than anything else the style grated and the dialogue seemed unnatural, and that sort of writing is unlikely to make me feel or think.

I've seen the autobiographical factor before; I'm not sure why it works, but it does. I worked on the crew of Platoon, saw the movie many times, and concluded that the attention, and much of the critical acclaim, came from the fact that the film was directed by a veteran. It was a good movie, and probably deserved the screenplay and editing awards, but I didn't think it was a great one.

Like most of us, I prefer books that make me think and feel. If they can make me laugh as well, that's ideal.
