MB, re: Packard Bell/NEC
As for any of the top five going under, we know now MD was predicting an event that might happen over the next several years. (And to impress attendees at his to- do).
Several years from now I expect the top five producers to be from China and the PacRim. The question is whether they will be OEM's, (ala the e-Machine model), or sub-contractors to the top five PC companies in the US. Acer seem's to be re- positioning itself as the latter.
It seems to me we're looking at consumer electronics here. How may US brands are there for TV's, Video Cam's, CD player's, etc? Is this a realistic model for PC's going forward? One saving grace for the US makers is I doubt there will be much convergence between the TV and PC. But PC's are going to keep getting cheaper, and easier to build. (Got to keep putting more functions on those blazing fast 0.13 micron die).
As for P/B, I think they've totally lost it. I don't know how NEC is doing, but it seem's P/B has lost all it's shelf space to IBM, Compaq, e-Machines and a couple others. (When is the last time you saw ad's for P/B from the retailers?) And I don't think they're in the business segment at all.
JMHO's.
