To some extent, I think this debate about CPU power misses a more subtle point. The issue is not whether more processing power is needed
at the client side, in general more will be needed as the BW goes up to handle the extra data, the question is whether this power will be concentrated in a high power general purpose CPU with fuctions such as video, DVD, LAN, xDSL, etc. done with software as much as possible, or whether this power will be distributed over specialized hardware. The usual flexibility, upgradeability, time to market, etc. arguments for SW vs HW still apply.
