Canadians are forced by our intrusive and omni-present government to limit foreign content in their retirement accounts to 20% in order to keep the money in Canada, so when we have a Canadian winner like Nortel, we buy big.

Canadian companies who really "make it" are jointly listed on the US markets. Toronto Dominion Bank owns Waterhouse, hence the recommendation from Putnam's, but our government is down on our banks (wouldn't let them merge; called the bank presidents "liars" - right... like that would the pot calling the kettle etc etc), so I wouldn't buy the banks myself.

I have done very well over the years, however, with a Canadian drilling company, Precision Drilling (PD in Canada; PDS on New York). Fantastic management, largest driller in Canada, good PE, loads of cash and aggressive. It's been a great play on the energy sector for me...and I am confident bigger things are ahead if oil and gas prices hold. PD is much cheaper than its US counterparts...

cheers, amf
