Micron CEO tells Japanese business journal of 0.15-micron plans for local fab

Jul 16, 1999 ---

* Firm will accelerate monthly DRAM output to 50 million 64M chips

Micron Technology Inc. President and Chief Executive Officer Steve Appleton told Japanese business journal Nihon Keizai Shimbun, that the U.S. memory maker plans to accelerate its monthly DRAM production to the equivalent of more than 50 million 64M chips by year-end. Micron currently produces roughly 30-35 million chips a month. In contrast, Japan's chipmakers are expected to make 10-15 million chips a month at the year's end, the Japanese business journal reported.

In 2000, Micron said it would install at its main plant in Japan equipment necessary for 0.15-micron manufacturing.

For the fiscal year through Aug. 31, the company has budgeted $1.2 billion for capital spending, mainly on DRAM chips. Appleton said the memory maker will maintain this investment pace in the next fiscal year as well.
