Sam, A horizontally integrated company does better in an industry that is experiencing fast technological changes. Being horizontally integrated enables the company to be competitive by focusing in on what it does best and adapting quickly to change. A vertically integrated company does better in a mature industry. In a maturing industry, a few horizontal companies exist within their own market space, and the horizontal companies begin to eat (vertically) each other's lunch as a way to continue its growth.
