The story is that he more or less gave the go ahead to depose Diem, not knowing that it would be taken as a license to assassinate him and members of his family....

I didn't here that. But if you were a bootlegger during prohibition I would think you would have had to do business with "gangster" types. Or at least liquor smugglers.
