Reseller, re backup: today new computers come with a 'restore' CD
which will reinstall the same software the factory put on the HD,
as you know. This reduces the need to backup ALL software [even the
software installed by the user later]. For software ADDED by the
user, he usually has CDs. So, all he needs to backup are files [like
word documents, spread sheets] he CREATED. I find my created files
easily fit on a single ZIP disk. In case of a HD crash then, I spend
about a day installing a new HD and reinstalling all software and
created files.

I mention all this to say the ZIP suits me fine for backup.
I do not expect to restore every single file I ever downloaded
from the web. Most of them are never looked at again anyway.

[This won't be so convenient for users with large collections
of picture files etc.]

The USB ZIP is particularly handy, because new PCs have USB
connectors, so personal files are easily transferred to new
computers as well. But an awareness must be fostered, especially
among first-time users. Personally I have two PCs with USB
and the ZIP has come in handy several times. Try to transfer
a 16MB browser to another PC by e-mailing it. :)

<Is the Zip drive that you refer to the one purchased many moons ago ?>

Yep, the ATAPI Zip is still going strong through 4 OSes (Win95, OSR2, NT 4.0 and now 98). The only things I've got that have lasted longer are the floppy drive and a P-60 with mobo on the wife's PC. Everything else has died and gone to heaven at least once since I got the Zip. Even the mice and keyboards.
