Try this for your answer. The rest of the argument you will have to debate with those far more qualified than me.

Ultimately, hydrogen will be available to each residence and business through a pipeline
infrastructure, analogous to the present natural gas pipeline network. Hydrogen will be used to supply
electricity to each home and business by locally sited fuel cells which provide the electricity as well as
space heating, with no air or water pollution, in a quiet unobtrusive manner compatible with our daily
environment. Such a distributed generation system may eliminate the need for large, central power
plants and provide electric utilities with increased flexibility in the design of their systems. Indeed,
natural gas-powered stationary fuel cells are already sold as environmentally clean distributed
cogeneration power systems, serving as a test bed and precursor to future hydrogen-powered
cogeneration systems.

Fun-da-Mental#1........Every fuel cell..PEM...SOFC....MCFC.. and alkaline...requires pure hydrogen as a fuel. The natural gas supply piped into a home has the hydrogen in it stripped out to use as fuel. It requires heat to do this....A PEM and alkaline cell do not run hot enough to provide this heat so a additional piece of equipment called a reformer is used to strip hydrogen out of the natural gas...diesel etc. A SOFC and MCFC create high temperatures themselves so this heat can be used to strip hydrogen from whatever fuel supply. The natural gas/diesel/methanol may go directly into the cell but only the hydrogen from these fuels is being used. The oil/chemical industry already produces hydrogen in large amounts from oil and natural gas. Storage on board a vehicle safely...infa-structure for fueling....is expensive and may take a while to put in place. Until then Pem fuel cell cars will have small reformers on-board to provide hydrogen from gasoline/methanol/natural gas. Many companies are working on this.....raisin
