I'm not sure if investors in general appreciate SI for what it is because many investors are caught up in the excitement of hyping their stocks. I think you would agree that Yahoo and Raging Bull are low quality discussion sites compared to SI.

Yahoo and Raging Bull are low quality discussion sites.

I am a bit disappointed in your first sentence above. I would think you, of all people, would realize what a difference SI is to the investment world. This is not a place for hyping stocks the those that try to do it here are shunned by the intelligent, informed investor. The general investor does appreciate SI for what it is, and that is intelligent, rational and educated discussions that are relevant to the topics.

These other finance message boards are a sickness... they hurt SI and investors don't seem to realize it.

Another point that I disagree with you on. The sickness that prevails unattended on the other message boards is what makes SI that much more respected for what it is. Have you ever heard any other board try to compare themselves to Yahoo, NO, they want to be compared to SI, because SI is the leader, undisputed.

Above all, I appreciate the quality of SI.

My contention with the new design is that it is a negative pull on quality.

Much the same as I might read the content of Wired magazine, were it not for the abusive layout and design.

And that's after they cleaned it up.

Jef, ever thought of keeping both sites?

I believe SI is popular because SI has the best quality discussion of any site on the Internet.

I agree entirely. I'm a recent subscriber to SI. I had a chance to look at other sites and compare the discussions there with what happens here. I paid to join SI because of the quality of the discussions here. That's what matters. I surely didn't pay for it because of what the site looked like or because of its non-discussion features.

I didn't like the look of the "classic" SI and still don't, but I read the messages there and participated in the discussions because of what's said.

Throughout this beta process, I've tried to say both what I like and to give reasons why I like what SI and Go2Net are doing with the beta and to mention a few things I don't like any why I don't like them.

I won't repeat it all, but will say again that I think the basic design for the beta is superb. Despite what I've said is an unfortunate loss of white space on the sides of the message, the new site still emphasizes the message and even allows those who need a box around the message to get one now.

New features (mostly from the old StockSite) have been added to SI without detracting from its prime purpose of the site.

So to the general purpose of this message: Thank you to you and all the folks down on 3rd for making the changes, for listening to suggestions, and working to make SI an even better site for the future.
