To wily, PMS Witch, Mark, Richard J. LeBel, Cheeky Kid, and jw... This will be a long post but some wanted to know the outcome of my journey into the unknown... :-) Thanks for the advise you offered before my trip to my brother-in-laws to reformat his hard drive and reinstall WIN95. To say the least, it was interesting. I was planning on going up there on Thursday evening. Wednesday night I got a call that my mother was taken to the emergency room. Took Thursday off work to go to hospital to see my mother and finally got to my b-i-l's about 5:30. First thing I did was back up all data from application programs they use. Mainly just Quicken and MS Office Excel. Also made a WIN95 startup disk in case I needed it. I brought up my WIN98 startup disk like wily suggested because it had CDROM drivers on it. When I was satisfied I had everything backed up, I decided to go for it. I shut down the computer, put in my WIN98 startup disk and went to the a prompt. Put in FORMAT C:/U and was going to lay back and wait for two hours for it to format. That is what I thought from other people on this tread. Well, it took about 7 minutes and I was shocked. Now with my WIN98 startup disk in while rebooting, I chose "Start Windows 98 with CD ROM support" and then at the a> typed in D:\setup. I had the WIN95 setup disk in the drive and chose "setup". Everything was going good until the lightning storm knocked out the power to the whole house. Needless to say I had to start over with the WIN95 install. Finally got through the install and restarted the computer. To my amazement, WIN95 showed up on the screen. Then had to reload printer drivers and Internet Explorer. Finally got up and running and internet connections made. It worked. The only thing I didn't get going is the sound card. Well, I got home at 1:30 Friday morning feeling pretty proud of myself. Before I left we checked their email and Gateway said their new computer would be shipped on the 26th. They were pretty down thinking it would be there the next day. Well, Friday afternoon they called all excited and said the UPS truck just delivered their new computer. But priorities come first. Spent Friday with my mother in hospital. This morning I went back up to my b-i-l's and we installed their new computer. Loaded new application programs and restored the data that we had backed up. They kept their old printer and monitor. I had to load printer drivers and also load software for their new scanner. WIN98 came with the new version. (Second Edition) Also it had IE5 installed. Everything is up and running and was home by 7:30 this evening. I'm glad I had the opportunity to go through this ordeal. Learned a lot. PS...I decide not to take their old computer home with me and try to get the sound problem working. I have two computers sitting here now. Wife would throw me and all the computers out if I would have brought another one home. :-) H Peterson
