I really like this description of Wind River from Red Herring's 100 top public companies:
WIND RIVER SYSTEMS- Software where you least expect it.
Wind River's market is everywhere. The companyis the dominant developer of embedded systems, the software brains behind non-PC devices from anti-lock brakes to the Mars Pathfinder. Embedded microprocessors make up approximately 90% of all chips currently sold and Wind River's miniature operating system, VxWorks, helps many of those microprocessors interact with the equipment they inhabit. Wind River counts many household names, AT&T, GM, Boeing, IBM and Toyota among its customers. With an OS that supports more than 25 families of microprocessors, including Intel, NEC, Motorola and ARM, and more than 5000 design wins, Wind River is poised to tackle the fastest growing most exciting market for embedded systems: consumer products.

Thanks, Peter. Sounds like it wasn't a single news event (earnings warning or serious miss, CEO quitting, etc.) but a series of things. When did the CEO bail, and why?
