Way you could get nicked by Uncle is if you had say $50k in ST Gain in 1stQ, then a $50k ST Loss in 4thQ. Even though you netted out zero for the year, you might end up paying the interest + penalties on the missed Q1 payment due, if your required to make quarterly estimated tax payments. At least this is my understanding.
