Richard losses are written off no matter how you look at it. In order to maintain bottom line there has to be a profitable entry somewhere which yes, can equal inflation. The product of the y2k issue bothered me more so because of additional pressure placed on our own currency vulnerable to fraud. When you infuse monies and monies have vanished you are creating more pressure on the dollar by lowering it's value by the infusion. Those dollars have not vanished but are in circulation elsewhere, hence you reduce the value and add yet more fuel to inflation .
