Thanks, I now understand.

But I'd still point out that removing the best 2 performers from the Dow (about 7% of the stocks in that portfolio) is equivalent to removing the top 33 stocks from the S&P 500.

Guess how well that portfolio would do without them.

Or if you took the top 330 performers out of the Russell 5000...

Quantitatively, Bob's observation is absolutely correct. But for an individual's investment well being, the point is lost on me. IMO, it's just a statement of fact that has usually been true, is true and will probably remain true for a long time to come.

Now if Bob could tell us in advance, which 2 Dow stocks will be the top performers, then he'd certainly have my undying devotion! <vbg>
