makes it easier to see the depth of a discussion, etc.
(letting you expand/collapse a series of related visually-indented post headers.) This only works if the posters are linear thinkers though :)

I Agree and disagree. I believe it is important to maintain the continuity of a thread. The trees you are talking about...well I think you are talking about ..are really threads. Many of the other forums have threads that only last a day or two or maybe a week.. They can not sustain longer because either the posts disappear or the so called threads get buried in a format that can not compare to SI.

I do not think the concept lends itself to maintaining a quality thread. How many of the sites with the outline format can sustain a thread for years with thousands of posts?

That said

It may provide some benefit if it does not impact the interaction on a thread. I believe it could be implemented with a delayed option. ie If one is playing catch up and wants to read 'old posts' what difference does it make WRT to thread interaction? I would make it an option if it had a 30 day delay. ie no outlines for day to day posting. Outline options if one wants to read posts that are 30 days old or more.

Just an initial thought. SI already has one of the best interactive formats. Trying to compare it to the outline formats seems a step down.
