It's hard to say what happened in the Avery situation, though K is probably in the right there. K stayed solidly in Avery's corner after Avery's mistake-filled freshman year.

The Burgess situation is crystal clear, and has been from the beginning. He is a wuss. Like father, like son.

You have to take these kind of stories with a grain of salt. Every college basketball player has been told from the time they were in elementary school to "be like Mike" - in other words, be an NBA superstar. Their high school coaches have told them that they are good enough to do so, their parents have told them, the fans have told them, and they believe it. And when given a realistic view of their chances by their coach, naturally, they and their parents get pissed off. It's like those stupid investors who are constantly suing companies when the stock goes down. Avery and Brand are two different players, and Coach K evaluated them as such, and gave them two different prognoses on their chances.

In hindsight, Coach K was right. Avery should have returned. He could have been a top 5 pick next year and be making 2-3 times more. But due to Avery's grades and poor family perhaps leaving now made the best sense.

As for Burgess, who the heck knows? He would have received 5 times more press at Duke in one season than most NBA players in 5 seasons..
