With no horizon because of the hazy atmosphere and the night conditions, you could be diving for the ocean in a slow spin and not even realize it unless you were paying close attention to the instruments. All the evidence points to this scenario since he did not radio for help and the emergency beacon was not turned on prior to impact. They probably didn't know what hit them and were likely to have been immediately killed or knocked unconscious by the impact with the water.

Never, never fly IFR unless you are legally certified in IFR. I think he made a very tragic mistake.
