In other societies, there is female infanticide (after birth). India, of which you mentioned. In China, where the couples are limited to one child, the government rule has led to abortion of female fetuses till they can get their allotted male baby. This is an (in)direct consequence of the government's policies. If they were to be fair, they could limit males to fathering one offspring. This would eliminate the need for 99% of abortions.
