Well, Wily, you guessed correctly. Still got the lock-up with the following error message: "A fatal exception OD has occurred at 015F:00000CBA. The current application will be terminated." Same message I was getting before. And then nothing, just froze on me, couldn't even exit with Ctrl-Alt-Delete, had to turn the darn thing off and wait for ScanDisk to finish, etc. Took a while.

I don't know when this problem started, really. Was working fine previously, then I noticed it a few days ago just by chance. May have been screwed up for a while, but not more than a couple months.

I'm going to send you a separate message about something else weird that's now going on, my own fault, no doubt.

Bill

MS-DOS prompt ...

You got it exactly right. Only difference was I suggested make a copy and work with it instead. Since the changes are simple, they're easy to undo with the original anyway, reducing the need for the extra precaution. Your method saves time and complexity.

If he continues getting locked up, we'll look for something refusing to be put to sleep by Windows. I hope we don't need to visit that village because the natives aren't known for being friendly.

Cheers, PW.
