[Qwest, U S West to expand data CLEC to 25 cities]

(Will QWST divest itself of its stakes in COVD and RTHM? --mark)

NEW YORK, July 18 (Reuters) - New merger partners Qwest Communications International Inc. and U S West Inc. said on Sunday they plan to expand their local data operations in 25 cities outside of U S West's core 14-state territory.

U S West, the smallest of the five Baby Bell local phone companies, on Sunday agreed to be acquired by Qwest for about $36 billion and terminated its previous $30.7 billion merger pact with Global Crossing Ltd.

U S West provides local and wireless phone services, as well as data services, to 25 million customers in 14 states from Minnesota to Washington.

The combined Qwest and U S West now will launch data CLEC (competitive local exchange carrier) operations in 25 cities in territories dominated by local phone companies SBC Communications Inc.and Bell Atlantic Corp.

SBC serves 8 states mostly in the Southwest and on West Coast, while Bell Atlantic covers 13 states from Maine to Virginia.

"We're going to be expanding our data services -- the data CLEC -- in 25 additional cities outside the region...we've got an enormous growth opportunity," Qwest Chairman Joseph Nacchio said in a conference call with reports.
