Hi Gerald, I hear you. It sounds like US West is making it tough on you. Sorry to hear that. It must be frustrating to have to deal with them. Good luck. Best, Amy J

Gerald - <Is there ANYONE else out there who can show that DSL is cheaper than a cable connection? Especially for connections of the same speed?>

No. I believe it is a few bucks more. But you get a choice of ISP. With cable, one doesn't.

Also, GTE is targeting small business with its services. I believe the phone co. will have an advantage for this market over cable.

Cheaper? No. Better? Yes.

I used to live in Phoenix, and I was one of the first @Home customers outside of the Paradise Valley test area. To summarize my experience:

- Outages occurring roughly once a month, lasting up to two days
- Bad customer service - I was not a Cox Cable customer, therefore tech support sometimes wouldn't take my calls as "you can't have a cable modem if you're not a cable TV customer"
- Misbilling
- Performance that degraded badly as my neighbors signed up
- Performance that was badly below expectations during evenings and weekends
- Being informed that using VPN connections over their network was a violation of their policy

I recently moved back to Oregon, where I have DSL.

- Not a single outage in five months
- Consistently getting the full bandwidth that I'm paying for
- They don't care what I use the bandwidth for
- ISP choice allows me to go with a company that will provide multiple static IPs and other goodies

In other words, DSL has been worth every additional penny. YMMV.
