I think the first strategy makes sense, the second implies an ever-rising price which often doesn't turn out true. If you sell
Jan 2000 in-the-money then come January you might buy them back, at profit or loss, and sell April, etc. Possibly extending the final liquidation to beyond 12 months from purchase. I'm not sure how to apply the wash rules correctly, however, for claiming a LT gain. My first guess is that all the intermediate steps are Short-term and the final call+stock sale is LT.
