Christopher, when I read, and re-read, and re-read Tolstoy and Dostoyevsky and Chekhov as a teenager, I had never been to Russia either, and I knew nothing about the culture. They just took me by storm -- just as they took Western Europe and the United States by storm, when they were first translated from the Russian. There had been nothing like "The Russians." And there is nothing like them. Pity you don't "get" it. Matter of taste, obviously. Joan
