The thrill is great once- but I think what Lather is saying is we aren't up to being thrilled over and over (at least I'm not- I'd get all depressed if I got thrilled all that much.)

It bums me out. I Don't Enjoy reading about folks suffering great misfortune by a whole string of bad luck.
I suffer when I read or see sad or awful stories. I do not feel exalted at the end - just used. I have a real need for a Happy Ending, or at least an ending marked by hope.
Take one of the greatest books I ever read - the Forge of God by Greg Bear. In it the planet Earth ceases to exist. But I read it four times - because humanity isn't extinguished. Great disaster - but always hope.
