AOL Denies Entering Free-PC Fray

newspage.com

DULLES, VIRGINIA, U.S.A., Newsbytes via NewsEdge Corporation : AOL (NYSE:AOL) denies a report published in PC Week saying that the Internet services giant is working with National Semiconductor to develop a small Internet access device as part of the current "free PC" fad.

AOL spokeswoman Wendy Goldberg told Newsbytes that she is aware of the report, which was published today, but insists it is totally untrue.

"We are working with National Semiconductor on the AOL TV project," she said, "And that's all."

National Semiconductor Corp. (NYSE:NSM) Thursday announced the launch of a tiny chip ... the Geode SC1400 ... a breakthrough in the small electronic appliance niche.

The PC Week article suggested that AOL would develop a personal access device (PAD) and make it available to members at little or no cost so they could access the Internet while away from their desktop.

But Goldberg says AOL's only project with National Semiconductor is the development of a TV set-top box, which is National's roll-out target market.

The AOL TV project envisions the creation of interactive TV.
