<And if FPU is key in the graphic workstation niche, Intel won't be able to compete against the Athlon based only on performance for AT LEAST one year.>

If AMD's marketing department has any clue whatsoever, they'll do their darnest to target Athlon towards this niche, where performance sells much more than price. Same thing with servers.

Unfortunately, I get the impression that AMD is shooting for an "Athlon everywhere" approach, meaning that AMD will try to have Athlon go against every market segment that Intel creates, from low to high end. I think this sort of strategy is all too normal for Jerry "Intel charges usury prices" Sanders. He'll most likely try and divide up his limited resources to make Athlon look like a jack-of-all-trades processor. Knowing him, he won't stop until every market segment confesses that Athlon is God.

Far be it for him to concentrate on mere "niches," you know, which would be an excellent strategy for players who are up against industry titans.
