Launch Media to use RealNetworks for music videos
SANTA MONICA, Calif., July 19 (Reuters) - Launch Media Inc. (Nasdaq:LAUN - news) said on Monday it would make its online library of more than 1,000 music videos available using RealNetworks (Nasdaq:RNWK - news) streaming format.

Under the deal, Launch Media's Web site, www.Launch.com, will be featured as a default music site on RealNetworks' RealPlayer G2 software, one of the most popular programs for receiving streamed video or audio.

''This will accelerate our growth,'' Launch Chief Executive Officer David Goldberg said in an interview. He declined to disclose the financial terms of the deal.

Launch said by Tuesday it would have 200 videos available in the G2 format and was working on encoding the remaining ones, Goldberg said.

''We want to be the one place where a music fan goes to get everything they want on the Internet,'' he said.

Launch, headquartered in Santa Monica, Calif., streamed more than 1.8 million videos in June, the most of any Web site. It so far has used the Windows Media format developed by RealNetworks rival Microsoft Corp. (Nasdaq:MSFT - news).

Its video collection includes selections by pop singers the Backstreet Boys, alternative band the Offspring, classic rockers Queen and rap group A Tribe Called Quest.

Goldberg said Launch, whose investors include Intel Corp., Sony Music Entertainment and NBC Multimedia Inc., wanted RealNetworks' technology to extend its reach, including to users of Apple computers who do not have Windows Media.

''We have been perceived, possibly incorrectly, to be on Microsoft's side of the fence,'' Goldberg said. ''We are going to work with the best technology.''

Goldberg noted Launch was exclusively using Microsoft's Windows Media Audio to offer several dozen songs available for digital download.
