I'm curious as to how ISP's can maintain their levels of profitability. By chance, I spoke with Micron computer and they are offering a free Celeron 400 PC with 15 inch monitor, 32 Meg RAM, 4.3 gig drive in exchange for 3 years of on line service thru earthlink for $790. That comes to $21.94 per month. Shoudn't these offers substantially affect the bottom line for AOL et al?

Stephen Karasick: Thanks for the post. I am new to AOL and I have taken a serious position at 125. I feel AOL is the brand to beat in the Internet. It's got a name like Coca Cola in the beverage industry.

Who else can be compared to AOL as an ISP "utility"? Your post mentions many "what if's". Of course subscriber base increase is very important.

I am dismayed to read that the AOL Europe division is resorting to giving away service for free. This kind of pricing hurts the bottom line near term. What do you think?

Has AOL beat earnings estimates in the past on a regular basis? Will they be held to the mythical whisper number of $0.13 per share? If they earn $0.12 will that cause a sell off?

I think when expectations get this high, the details have to be in the fine analysis of the numbers.

I am confident in management of AOL and model.

By the way, I have a large position in SUNW as well and believe the management of these two companies is "right on"!

I am remaining a long term bull on AOL.

To ALL:

<<<<<<This Thursday night, America Online (NYSE: AOL -
Quotes, News, Boards) will announce fourth quarter
results. According to I/B/E/S, the No.1 Internet Service
Provider should earn $0.11 per share--a 332% gain over
the year-ago quarter. The whisper number, the unofficial
number analysts expect earnings to match, is about
$0.13. >>>>>>

What is the CORRECT date of AOL's earnings?
According to their website and 2 e-mails I received
from Investor Relations, it is Wednesday July 21st,
yet the article above states Thursday July 22nd.
STEVEN CASE OR BOB PITTMAN , you're
being paged by the thread!!!
