Herc - I was timing out so sent less about the TDispatch article than I wanted. As one of the "lazy" and "non-net savvy" users (I come from a land of punchcards and gave up computers when GE still made them and Fortran 2 was hot stuff) the article referred to, I think I'll be able to buy on-line, song-by-song, classic and swing and '20s and '30s jazz (in addition to popular artists) just like people bought sheet music before radio, and sooner rather than later. I mentioned Lorraine Comstock's comments as Rioport's spokesperson in the article as positive because she was talking about how the industry is getting together to address the pirating issue. I also can't believe the article's "only 3% by 2003" projection; eCommerce appears to have grown faster than anybody predicted, and I can't believe eMusic access, which is where the younger, more "savvy" users hold the market, will be the exception because of us lazy, non-savvy users. And about mail-order music - I'm getting picky in my middle age and, rather than browse through 100s of thousands of tapes and CDs at Tower for the one or two songs I want, I'll let my fingers do the walking online while I watch TV. I buy 20-40 CDs a year by the way So, what color you going to get? I like my flat-gray metal basic Rio but haven't decided on a color for the next step.
Regards,
Harry (a Trog by any definition)

Herc, re:"the major record labels offer sites..."

Hi Herc,

My thinking was similar, but the announcements today and yesterday point to RipPort's web site as the one-stop shop for music downloads.

Looks like RioPort is going to be the Yahoo for audio files. I wonder if there are any competing sites? Is this going to play out like Yahoo!, Lycos, HotBot, etc...?

Just my opinion and curiosity.

Jon :)
