CG,

No written exam is required before you get into the plane.

Requirements are:

Must have Medical Certificate (aka "Student Pilot Certificate") before solo flight.

Must have Medical Certificate and pass written exam before practical test.

Practical test includes both theory (individual quizzing from the examiner) and actual flight performance.

The typical path is:

1) Do some basic homework and reading first.

2) Get into the plane with an instructor takeoffs, landings and simple performance maneuvers. (ie, become comfortable with the plane)

3) Get the medical exam which allows you to solo under an instructor's supervision in a limited area.

4) Solo flight (at many flight schools this requires a second instructor to complete a "phase check")

5) More complex performance maneuvers and emergency procedures

6) Cross country flight with instructor including use of navigation systems.

7) Cross country solo flight

8) Night flight

9) Touch up and signoff for the checkride. (Again, often requires a "phase check" with a different instructor.)

10) Checkride.

Ground/theory instruction is usually provided along the way. Most students I know take the written test sometime after they solo and before they cross country. By that point you've usually covered all the theory.

Some schools do formal ground schools and everybody takes the written test when the ground school is done. Usually a 4-6 weeks long, meeting a couple of nights a week. This is pretty close to the amount of time it takes most students to get past their solo flight.
