..Most investors own small-company stocks because they figure those
stocks are best for the long haul. In large part, that's because of a
celebrated study by Chicago research firm Ibbotson & Associates, which
found that small-company stocks have outperformed their larger brethren
since 1926.

Unfortunately, more recent history doesn't bear out Ibbotson's
findings. The past 30 years, small-company funds have lagged growth-and-income funds and mid-cap funds...
