< Arkansas National Guard Will Be on Duty on January 1-2 sightings.com About 10,000 Arkansas National Guard troops will be called up for weekend training on January 1-2. Call it on-the-job training. This is from SIGHTINGS (July 15). About 38 states reportedly have similiar plans in place. Damn good thing for the Arkansas residents (as well as those in other states) that their national guard and certain political leaders are not denialist do-nothingers and pollys! It does not require a large leap in logic to foresee a potential that the states' national guard can/will be federalized in December. * * * * * * * * * * * * * <Arkansas' 10,000 National Guard troops had best not stay out too late on Dec. 31 ringing in 2000. With the fear of 2000 computer problems, their once-a-month employer has plans for them the next morning. Monthly drills for troops in more than 70 units, including 8,000 in the Army National Guard and 2,000 in the Air National Guard, are scheduled for the weekend of Jan. 1 and 2. Individual units typically set weekends each month for their drills, when unit members report to the armory. "That's a major decision to be made," said Capt. Cary Shillcutt, Arkansas National Guard spokesman. "We are the first-line support to the state, so sacrifices must be made sometimes." . . . . In cases of natural disasters, the governor may call out the National Guard to help state police. Towns may also request assistance through the governor's office. In case of catastrophe, Shillcutt said, National Guard troops probably will help state police and local authorities on Jan. 1 by performing such tasks as directing traffic where traffic lights are out and enforcing nighttime curfews. Also, the National Guard is stockpiling food and supplies for troops for several days. It also is overhauling its AM radio system for internal communications. . . . sightings.com --------------------------------------------------------------------------------
