There's clearly an element of jealousy in the MS antitrust matter. Historically, monopoly status was attained because the government granted special favors or dominance to certain enterprises. Phone, electric and gas utilities are examples of this. In Microsoft's case, this is a technology startup that actually earned its monopoly through good technology and smart business practices. Although the legality of some of its distribution practices may be subject to question, it is unprecedented for a company such as this to be under such heavy attack by a justice department.
