3Com Corporation (Nasdaq:COMS - news) today announced that the University of Pennsylvania (Penn), the first university founded in America, is upgrading PennNet, its 200-building campus network, using advanced 3Com® systems. The 40,000-user, multimillion dollar network upgrade when completed will include 150 3Com next-generation CoreBuilder® 9000 enterprise switches and CoreBuilder 3500 Layer 3 switches. Presently, 10 CoreBuilder 3500 systems are providing Fast Ethernet backbones in campus buildings in which 3Com SuperStack® II Ethernet switches have the capabilities to deliver 10/100
megabits per second (Mbps) links to networked desktops. The university is also using Total Control® multiservice access platforms for remote connectivity for 15,000 off-campus users.
