Wired Inc. Introduces FireWired Hardware DV Codec MOUNTAIN VIEW, Calif.--(BUSINESS WIRE)--July 19, 1999--Wired, Inc. today announced the introduction of FireWired. FireWired is an external converter box that lets you convert analog video to DV, or DV to analog. Analog sources, such as VHS or Hi8 tapes, can be easily transferred to DV for archiving or editing. Convert Legacy Video Content to DV FireWired is the easiest way to move legacy (analog) content into your computer. Video, from any analog source, fed into FireWired is converted to DV in realtime and sent to your computer via FireWire (IEEE1394). FireWired can also convert your DV content to analog so that it can be distributed on analog media. Video Mirroring FireWired can be used to send a duplicate image of what appears on your computer screen to an external television of overhead projector. Presentations stored on a computer can be shared with a group, effortlessly. Optional TV Tuner FireWired was designed to accept an optional TV tuner module. The TV tuner module lets you feed live television broadcasts to your computer or camcorder. A Complement for Digital MediaPress Once your video content is in the digital domain, Wired's Digital MediaPress transcoder (optional) allows you to convert DV content to industry standard MPEG format. MPEG is an important standard because: 1) it can be played on any platform whether its Macintosh, Windows, Sun, or Linux, and 2) it can store 10 times the amount of content in the same amount of storage space. In other words, when used with a DVD-RAM, the user can store 140 minutes of MPEG2 video rather than 14 minutes of DV. Or 40 minutes of MPEG2 video on a CDR rather than 4 minutes of DV. Specifications FireWired is a compact external box measuring 6"W x 4"D x 1.5"H. There are 2 RCA connectors for composite video i/o, two s-video connectors for s-video i/o, 4 RCA connectors for stereo audio i/o, and two ieee1394 connectors for FireWire i/o. When the TV tuner option is installed, a coaxial antenna connector is added. Pricing & Availability FireWired will be available in Q4 of 1999 and will retail for $399.
