Next-generation mobile phone service to be delayed
.c Kyodo News Service
TOKYO, July 19 (Kyodo) - The launch of a next-generation mobile phone service in Japan will be delayed to the end of 2001 from the middle of that year because of a holdup in the United States in the adoption of a technological standard for the new service, officials of the Ministry of Posts and Telecommunications said Monday.
The ministry's Telecommunications Technology Council was set to approve two new standards for the service under the International Mobile Telecommunication-2000 (IMT-2000) system proposed by the International Telecommunication Union.
But adoption will be postponed to September this year because of the delay in U.S. adoption of specifications of the Third Generation Code Division Multiple Access (cdma 2000) system, partly developed by Motorola Inc., the officials said.
The next-generation mobile phone service has a greater data capacity than the current system, and units can be used anywhere in the world.
Japanese electronics manufacturers hope to be the first in the world to introduce mobile phones for the new service, but the delay may affect their plans.
Japan plans to adopt cdma 2000 and the wideband code-division multiple access (W-CDMA) system, which will be used by NTT Mobile Communications Network Inc. (NTT DoCoMo) and European mobile phone operators.
