Pacific Bell Lowers Prices of High-Speed ATM Data Services for Businesses; New Prices Provide More Affordable Bandwidth for Integrated Data, Video and Voice Applications Jump to first matched term SAN FRANCISCO--(BUSINESS WIRE)--July 19, 1999--In an effort to bring one of the most powerful communication technologies to a wider range of business customers, Pacific Bell today announced price reductions of up to 42 percent for its FasTrak ATM Cell Relay Services.
FasTrak ATM Cell Relay Services provide flexible, powerful and cost-effective solutions for new or existing enterprise networks. Based on advanced Asynchronous Transfer Mode (ATM) technology, the services play a key role in Pacific Bell's suite of data services for large business customers.
"These price reductions are another example of Pacific Bell's ongoing effort to bring a full range of reliable and affordable communications services to customers," said Joe Simone, Senior Director of Data Services and Business Marketing for Pacific Bell's parent company, SBC Communications Inc. "These new prices will allow a wider range of enterprise customers to take advantage of ATM Cell Relay Services, some of the most powerful networking options available."
Price reductions vary depending on connection speeds for Cell Relay Services. For example, prices have been reduced by 42 percent for 45 megabits per second (Mbps) connections; 39 percent for 155 Mbps connections; and 12 percent for 1.5 Mbps connections.
ATM Cell Relay Services technology is used by corporations, universities, hospitals, financial institutions and other organizations to link geographically scattered offices, affiliates and other remote sites. It facilitates customers' ability to send and receive data, video and voice traffic through a full range of network configurations, from single-facility networks to point-to-point connections and wide-area networks (WANs) serving multiple offices.
Cell Relay allows business customers to designate the speed and "service class" of transmitted information, much like sorting first- and second-class mail, ensuring that communications that need consistent speed, such as voice and video, are given priority over data, which does not need the same consistent transfer rate.
The services' integration of data, video and voice allows customers to merge all communications traffic into a single medium, increasing efficiency and convenience of network management. This capability is a primary reason why ATM is emerging as the preferred technology platform supporting network convergence for multiservice solutions.
A packet-based technology, ATM can transport information at speeds ranging from 1.5 to 155 Mbps. At 155 Mbps, ATM connections are more than three times faster than DS-3 private-line services that link many of today's networks. ATM provides a high degree of flexibility, allowing customers to easily adjust the bandwidth of their network connections as needs change.
In addition to the new ATM price reductions, Pacific Bell has introduced' Inverse Multiplexing ATM (IMA). This new service gives customers wider-ranging bandwidth options -- 3, 4.5, 6 or 12 Mbps of ATM service -- over less costly DS1 circuits. Pacific Bell has also introduced Circuit Emulation Service (CES) for ATM, which enables customers to directly connect the Pacific Bell ATM Cell Relay Service Network to their PBX trunks. This capability enables customers to send and receive voice calls over ATM.
ATM also plays a role in the delivery of Pacific Bell's high-speed Asymmetrical Digital Subscriber Line (ADSL) service for businesses and consumers. ATM provides the high-capacity link between Internet service provider networks and Pacific Bell's ADSL network.
ATM Cell Relay Service provides several types of interfaces and services to fit a wide array of customer networks and is available in several forms, including a comprehensive end-to-end solution and an option that enables frame relay users to migrate to ATM. Customers are covered by Pacific Bell's 24-hour, seven-day-a-week technical support.
