The new systems, which capitalize on programming hooks for AOL's Instant Messenger service that have been accessible to developers for more than a year, will alert users when acquaintances come online and allow them to exchange messages on a real-time basis. In theory, portals like Yahoo! and The Microsoft Network will be able to develop their own software on-screen interfaces that can communicate instantly with AOL's massive user base according to the report.
