Actually, it was two things: the poll tax, as you say, and the sense that she was taking a hard line against European integration, and might cause Britain to be left out....But there were plenty of Tory "wets" who were waiting for an excuse, anyway. She had enough clout left to thwart Heseltine and install Major, but not enough to stay....

Interesting, well I kind of lump Major in with Thatcher the way Americans do Bush with Reagan's policies.

Ireland has had a huge infusion of cash from the US software industry and nothing soothes violent tensions like a booming economy I suspect. Seriously it sounds like Ireland could be on the cusp of major prosperity based on the emerging industries there, I plan to visit soon.
