A wash sale can be carried over to the next profitable trade of the same stock... plus I'm not really worried about a $450 tax loss... I'm more worried about losing $2000. <g> The truth is that tax consequences is the last thing in my mind when it comes to trading... it will be a nightmare if it ever does come into consideration.

BTW - that 600sh stop was not a total loss... it carried a 32 3/4 average... but 200 of those were bought at 31

Linda L - you can claim a loss even if you buy again within 30 days, you just need to postpone the write off until you sell the new security. You never lose a write-off on a loss, only postponement. If it's all done in the same tax period then it makes no difference in the end...

Hi Linda L,

That 30-day rule does not apply for daytraders. With the amount of trade that SF did, he should be qualified to be called daytraders. More information can be found at smartmoney.com

I'm just nosy.

Linda,

If you get CNBC, they are about to have a segment on taxes and day trading. You may find something of interest there.
