< how can you discern a sell to open from a sell to close? >
Of course you can't be certain on any individual trade but with over 13 million shares changing hand so far today you can be certain the shorts must have added to the pool as there cannot be more than 3 million actually available to trade. The churning is day traders swapping shorted shares, and shorting more as they go at ever increasing prices. Just on Island alone they have traded over 4 million shares all in small parcels. A lot of those little guys are going to believe they have another hot Internet stock and won't be happy to sell until they see at least 300% from their buy price, not the $1.50 it was a week ago. Shorting AOL with lots of shares out there is one thing but shorting a stock like FSTW with such a small float is courting disaster IMHO.
