Hi Bill,

I agree with you about Day. He's great at saving just enough and finishing strong.

In some cases I would prefer to have open lengths. Let's assume a half in 47 - 48 is average for a particular class. I'd rather be clear by 3 in 47.2 than running head to head wrapped up in 48.3. Horse's tend to run faster and relax more when there's no one near them. Even if they have to run a little faster to get there. Cordero was the best I ever saw at getting those open lengths without abusing the horse to get it.

Day's ride on Cat Thief was terrific, but I think if Angel rode him and that other horse wasn't rank, Cat Thief would have won by daylight. Day would have backed the pace down to whatever he could get away with and been forced into the ding dong battle through the stretch. Sometimes that other horse has a better kick.

Keep in mind that I thought Junior was "god" so you are talking to a very biased fan here. (g)
