Executive Summary IN INTEL.COM In just four years, AutoNation exploded from a $50 million waste management company to an $18 billion enterprise that is one of the country's largest automotive retailers and car rental businesses. But the company's corporate computing infrastructure initially paid a price. With a myriad of system vendors, models, applications and configurations inherited from hundreds of mergers and acquisitions, AutoNation struggled to keep its client systems running reliably. To solve the problem, AutoNation standardized its software tool set around a limited number of supported configurations and replaced its 2,000 existing systems with Dell* Optiplex* PCs based on Windows NT*. To manage the clients, the company deployed ON Technology's On Command CCM* and Microsoft's System Management Server* (SMS). Additional efficiencies were gained from the use of the Wired for Management (WfM) technologies on the OptiPlex systems. AutoNation's IT department automated and streamlined configuration of client PCs using On Command CCM with the Pre-boot eXecution Environment (PXE) boot ROM included on the WfM-enabled OptiPlex systems. The result: AutoNation updated and replaced the entire base of corporate PCs in just four months, using only a small number of IT administrators. With the labor savings from the rollout alone, AutoNation estimates it recovered its investment in the ON Technology software. AutoNation also uses ON Command CCM to manage ongoing changes. Software distribution such OS updates are further streamlined since ON Command CCM takes advantage of OptiPlex remote wake-up for scheduled distributions. For a richer source of information for asset management, AutoNation uses Dell's OpenManage Client software and SMS to capture desktop management interface (DMI) data from the OptiPlex clients. Key results AutoNation achieved: More stable platforms for its corporate workforce. Dramatic reductions in IT labor costs. Each technician supported 80-100 desktops before the WfM rollout; today that number is 250. Increased agility at planning and deploying new applications on its corporate systems, helping maintain a competitive edge in the automotive market.
