Coby, I highly recommend a 5-part series shown on PBS about 5-6 years ago, shot by BBC, the title was called "Legacy". One episode was on Iraq civilization, one was on Egypt, one was on China, one was on India, and one was on South American/Maya civilization. I still remember one sentence very clearly, that "thanks God, China is not warlike". This is true, although China did bully its small weak neighboring countries over the years, China has never tried to colonize them. The only thing those Chinese emperors asked were some tributes.

China has had ocean navigation technology a couple of hundreds of years earlier than Westerners, but China never sent any armies to colonize anybody. The only thing China did was trade with other countries. The same thing goes with the gun powder.

As much as the Western countries want to portrait China as a war monger, the fact remains that China will never sent any troops to other countries to invade them.

So why Western countries is so afraid of China being strong? Beats me. I guess they assume China will do things like what they have done to other countries. So whatever the Chinses gov. says, the Western world will not believe, then I guess only the history will tell. But this is not applied to the Taiwan, because that is China's internal affair. None of other countries' business.
